How to Select Children’s Gifts that are Eye Safe

The holidays are almost here and that means toys and presents. Adoring relatives delight in treating the little ones to the newest toys to start off the New Year.
The American Optometric Association advises that family members learn and relay to others some restrictions about toy safety and vision. Injuries with unsafe toys and games do take place, occasionally resulting in damaged vision.

Here are some guidelines to protect children from toy related injury:

  1. When buying a gift, check that it is developmentally appropriate. Don't permit young siblings to play with toys made for older children.

  2. Show children the proper use of toys. Before play, if possible carefully look at new toys and games for broken or loose pieces.

  3. Watch young kids during playtime.

  4. Prevent eye injuries by steering clear of any toys that have dangerous, pointed edges or projectiles, such as BB guns.

Before you dish out that game that your child ''must have'', take a moment to review eye safety guidelines when it comes to children's toys and games. Anyone who has ever watched ''A Christmas Story'' should have learned that already. Happy Holidays to all.
